Big restaurant, big shop, and a car park that fills by half past ten on a Sunday. The cake portions are enormous and the meat counter is proper. Reviews are split on the chips, which is a very British thing to have strong feelings about, and I’m on the side of the people who think they’re overdone!
Closed Mondays. (Worth knowing before you drive over.)
Maxey’s Farm Shop
Brickfield Farm, Hockerton Road, Kirklington, Newark NG22 8PB. 4.5 from over 520 reviews.
Newer building, deli counter with a serious cheese selection, and a second building called Brickfield Barn next door for gifts. The outdoor seating looks over a field, which is the whole point of driving to a farm shop rather than going to Waitrose.
Open seven days, which none of the others manage.
Harker’s Farm Shop
Blackberry Farm, Clipston on the Wolds, near Keyworth NG12 5PB. 4.8 from 189 reviews, and the highest rated of the four.
This is the butcher’s one. French-trimmed racks of pork, frozen pies people drive back for, beef and lamb from the farm. There’s a play area and goats to feed, so it solves the “what do we do with the kids on Saturday morning” problem at the same time.
Closed Mondays and Sundays. Get there before 2pm on a Saturday.
Cropwell Farm Shop
The Old Fosse, A46 NG12 3AQ. 4.6 from 37 reviews.
Smallest, cheapest, and the one nobody knows about. It’s on the Fosse Way so you drive past it constantly without registering it’s there. Homemade pies, fresh veg, flowers at prices that made me check twice.
Open seven days from 7am, including Sundays, which makes it the one to remember when you’ve forgotten something.
